On the absurdity of Sharia Law.

Disclaimer: This is a rant specifically regarding aspects of Muslim Sharia Law, and revolves around a disturbing case of a young woman being punished as a result of being raped. It won't hurt my feelings if you opt not to read beyond this point.

The full article is here.

I shall now commence ranting.

I am all for freedom of religion. I really am. However, this type of thing disgusts me. To quote the article: "A district court in Saudi Arabian capital Jeddah sentenced a pregnant gang -rape victim to 100 lashes and one year imprisonment after the court pronounced her of committing adultery."

It continues: "The judge who pronounced the verdict said that the unmarried woman had committed adultery as she became pregnant after a forced sexual intercourse. She will be sent to a prison outside Jeddah to spend the one year imprisonment where she will be flogged after delivering her child."

I beg your pardon?

She committed adultery because she was gang-raped? Putting aside all religious doctrine, how can this possibly make sense to anyone??? In what warped, twisted mindset is being forced to have sex the same as choosing to have sex with someone in spite of your marital vows? WTF??

Do they think these things through?? Why of course they do. It's all laid out and explicitly stated: "According to Islamic Sharia law, The testimony of four male witnesses is the standard for establishing guilt in sexual offenses. If four male witnesses do not come forward and the rape victim becomes pregnant, her pregnancy becomes evidence that she has committed adultery."

In a twist of disgusting irony, this woman was raped by a man from whom she'd accepted a car ride...and his four friends. There's your four male witnesses, Your Honor. Any one of whom is the one responsible for getting her pregnant during this crime for which she is evidently responsible.

Guys? Really? Have you ever stopped and thought about how ridiculous this is?
I could go on for paragraphs about why this is wrong, disgusting, etc., but knowing my loyal blog minions, I'd just be preaching to the choir. What disgusts me is the presumably educated, intelligent men who unflinchingly enforce Sharia Law even when doing so is almost as appalling as what happened to this woman in the first place. What kind of blinders does someone - an entire culture! - have to wear to be able to even fathom that something like this is justice?

I don't have a problem with religion, as I've said before. I have a problem when religion trumps common sense and people suffer because of unbending adherence to absurd laws such as this, all in the name of pleasing a god who evidently has issues with women. Believe what you will, worship who you will, but don't do so mindlessly.

In closing, I sincerely hope that common sense prevails and someone steps in on behalf of this woman before she is punished for what was done to her. And here's hoping that those who follow and enforce Sharia Law figure out that the idea of a woman being at fault for her own rape is as antiquated as the Earth being flat.

It's 2009. The world is round. Women who are raped are victims, not criminals.

Get. With. The. Program.
