Getting Back in the Groove

I've been running myself ragged on this trip and have had very little time to write, but I'm starting to carve out a few hours here and there to work. I've managed about 5,000 words in the last couple of days, pushing Nine Tenths of the Law just past 17,000. I'm obviously not knocking out 5,000 a day like I do when I'm in my usual routine, but at this point, I'll take it.

I stopped writing a bit early last night because I wanted to switch gears and do some querying. As of last night, I've begun querying Playing With Fire. I sent it to 10 agents and received 2 rejections within 24 hours, but anything could happen with the other 8. Quite frankly, I'm just happy that I managed some writing and querying in amongst all the other insanity of traveling. I'll take every bit of forward motion I can get right now.

With August rapidly running out, I may miss my goal of a first draft every month unless I can go seriously batshit on Nine Tenths of the Law and knock out 60,000 words in 7 days. With a lot of traveling and craziness over the next few days, plus the inevitable jetlag, I don't foresee this happening. But hey, I finished the revised version of Playing With Fire this month and made serious progress on Nine Tenths of the Law, so I'm not complaining.

Whether or not I make my August goal, whether or not I get any partial or full requests from these agents, it feels good to get back into my groove and do something. I know I'm on vacation and shouldn't worry, but I'm so used to writing all the time, it feels weird if I go more than a day without doing so. I was also a little concerned that a lapse of 2-3 weeks might kill the momentum I've worked so hard to maintain, but I think I'll be okay.

Anyway, there it is...getting back into my groove. Now off to lunch with the editor that had Camera Shy and Luke Boydston's Baby a few months ago...

  1. Hope the lunch was good, and good luck with the target. Don't forget you're on holliday though. Lower targets for hols! :-)
